[Commonplace book], 1668-1679.

Manuscript, on paper, in the hand of Josias Calmady. The volume opens with entries from his studies at Oxford, including notes on Rycaut's Ottoman Empire and on geography in general; a chronology of the English kings; a "Compendium Metaphysicae" in Latin; and a "Description of ye painting of ye theater of Oxford" (Robert Streater's work in the Sheldonian Theatre). A section headed "Parliamentaria" contains Calmady's first-hand notes on the impeachment of Thomas Osborne, Earl of Danby, including passage of the bill of attainder and the subsequent negotiations between the Commons and the House of Lords. Volume also contains a few inventories of deer, trees planted, farm rents, and other notes, including a list of "Poor in the Parish of Wembury," in the hand of Waldo Calmady (d. 1755), Josias' son.

Thomas Osborne, Earl of Danby (1631/32-1712), son of a Yorkshire baronet, entered Parliament as member for York in 1661, served Charles II in a series of adminstrative positions, and was made Lord High Treasurer and Earl of Danby in 1674. In 1678, he pressed for the investigation of the Popish Plot, but the Commons impeached him in December of that year for his involvement in the French "subsidies" to Charles II. Josias Calmady was born in Bridstow, Devon. He matriculated at Trinity College, Oxford in May 1668 and entered the Inner Temple in the following year. He was called to the bar in 1676 and was elected as MP for Okehampton in March and October 1679, but was not returned in the 1681 elections. He married Elizabeth Waldo (d. 1694) and died in 1714.
